Research blogging do’s and don’ts
I’ve been thinking a bit what to publish about my research on my weblog, and went to search for other examples of research blogs to give me some guidelines.
I stumbled upon this website by Jill Walker who has written a valuable paper on blog usage and research together with Torill Mortensen. A very good read for anyone who is in doubt on what to blog and what not to. The following quote presents an interesting view:
“Blogs exist right on this border between what’s private and what’s public, and often we see that they disappear deep into the private sphere and reveal far too much information about the writer. When a blog is good, it contains a tension between the two spheres…”
The paper by Walker and Mortensen can be downloaded from the website, or directly from here: Jill Walker and Torill Mortensen, Blogging Thoughts: Personal Publication as an Online Research Tool (February 2002, PDF).

Thanks for the tip! If I have some time in my reading schedule I’ll try to get a copy. It’s actually hard to find good books on blogs, because sooo many are coming out nowadays.

Biz Stone works for Google, so the book very Google orientated (for a minute I was thinking of switching to Blogger!!!)

Haha, so I should skip the propaganda? 🙂 Recently there was a Dutch television documentary called Google: Behind the Screen. It is in Dutch, but most of the interviews are in English, so if you have some time it’s definitely an eye opener on Google. Gives a balanced view, the link: http://www.vpro.nl/programma/tegenlicht/afleveringen/27988731/media/28177289/

Hi, very interesting blog and research questions, and very relevant to me – I’m doing a research project about management/coaching in the UK creative industries, using my blog to tell the story. The research is the final assignment of my part-time MA in Creative and Media Enterprises at Warwick University, UK.
Re what to publish, I’m using the blog to podcast the interviews I did with managers and development professionals; I’ll also be making the finished paper available as a free download, and blogging about the findings to make them accessible/digestible. My research home page is http://www.wishfulthinking.co.uk/research
In retrospect I could maybe have published more en route – reflections between the interviews, etc. but time has been at a premium as I’m working as well as studying part-time. Maybe in a future project.
I’ll be very interested to follow your research.
